Shivani and Aniket told us upfront: they were not camera people.

No posing. No practised smiles. No standing in the middle of a street while strangers stare. They wanted photographs — they just didn't particularly want to be photographed. This, in our experience, is actually a very good starting point.

We planned an early morning through South Mumbai. The Fort area before the city woke up. Goregaon Beach in the first light. The Grand Hotel — one of Mumbai's most iconic and quietly beautiful backdrops. The plan was simple: walk, talk, let the city do what South Mumbai mornings do, and see what happened.

The Fort Area

There is a version of Mumbai that only exists before 8am — unhurried, golden-lit, the old buildings wearing the morning light in a way they don't manage at any other hour. We walked Shivani and Aniket through it. The brief was to forget us. They tried. The streets helped. Some of our favourite candid frames from the entire shoot came from here — moments between moments, the two of them in conversation, the city framing them without either of them noticing.

Goregaon Beach

The beach changed everything.

Something about open water in morning light has a way of making people forget they are being photographed. Shivani and Aniket walked to the shoreline and the camera shyness — which had been quietly dissolving all morning — disappeared completely. The light was doing exactly what early beach light does. The frames practically made themselves. These are the portraits we had been building towards since we left the Fort, and they delivered in every way.

The Grand Hotel

The Grand was our final stop — colonial architecture, warm stone, and the kind of gravitas that makes even a casual frame feel considered. By this point in the morning, Shivani and Aniket had forgotten we were there in the best possible way. The candid photographs from here have an ease to them that only comes when a couple is genuinely comfortable — not performing comfort, but actually feeling it.

Camera shy, they said. We have the photographs that say otherwise.
