Best Pre-Wedding Photoshoot Locations in Mumbai — A Photographer's Guide

Because where you shoot matters almost as much as how you feel in the frame.

A pre-wedding shoot is, at its core, a rehearsal — not for poses, but for presence. It's the session where you stop worrying about the lens, stop thinking about your hands, and actually start being yourselves. And Mumbai, more than most cities, gives you the backdrop to do that beautifully.

We've shot couples here at dawn, at dusk, in the middle of monsoon squalls and under streetlights at midnight. We know which spots catch the best light, which ones eat your timeline, and where the real magic moments tend to happen when you stop looking for them.

This is our honest, photographer-first guide to Mumbai's best pre-wedding shoot locations — what each place gives you, what to watch out for, and how to make the most of it.

What makes a great pre-wedding location?

Before the list, the framework. When we scout a location with a couple, we're asking four things:

  • What light does it give us, and when? Golden hour is everything — the difference between a warm, glowing frame and a flat midday snapshot.

  • Does it match your story? A heritage fort suits one couple. A chaotic street market suits another. Neither is wrong.

  • How much breathing room is there? Crowded spots need early starts. Quiet pockets let the real moments happen.

  • What are the rules? Permits, drone restrictions and access hours all shape what's possible.

With that lens, here are our picks.

1. Marine Drive — the classic that never gets old

There's a reason every Mumbai photoshoot guide starts here. Marine Drive is the city's most iconic stretch — sweeping curved boulevard, the Arabian Sea on one side, the glittering city skyline on the other. It photographs differently every hour of the day, which makes it endlessly versatile.

The mood it gives you: Timeless, romantic, unmistakably Mumbai. Great for couples who want the city to feel like a character in their story.

Best light windows:

  • Early morning (6–7 AM): Calm crowds, soft diffused light, long reflections on the wet promenade

  • Blue hour / early evening: The "Queen's Necklace" lights come alive — pure magic for long-exposure frames and moody portraits

What we love shooting here:

  • Walking candids along the curve — the couple small in the frame, city stretching behind

  • Tight portraits with the sea as bokeh background

  • Long-exposure light trails at dusk for a cinematic, editorial look

  • Quiet moments sitting on the parapet as the city hums around them

Permit note: Public space. Keep gear compact on busy stretches. Drones need prior clearance, especially near the southern Colaba end.

Watch out for: Afternoon heat and harsh midday light. This is not a noon location — timing is everything here.

2. Gateway of India, Colaba/ CST — the icon, done right

We know what you're thinking: isn't this too obvious? Here's our take — the Gateway of India is only clichéd if it's shot badly. At the right time, with the right approach, it's one of the most majestic pre-wedding backdrops in the country.

The mood it gives you: Regal, grand, timeless. The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel across the road adds another layer of old-world luxury.

Best light window: Before 7 AM. Non-negotiable. Once the crowds arrive, the magic evaporates. Early morning gives you soft blue-gold light, near-empty steps, and frames that feel like they belong in a film.

What we love shooting here:

  • Grand wide frames with the arch and sea

  • Close portraits on the stone steps catching early light

  • Candid ferry-departures and promenade moments

  • The Taj backdrop from across the road

Permit note: Public monument — personal photography is generally fine. For commercial shoots or additional lighting setups, check with the local authority ahead of time.

Watch out for: Pigeons, crowds and security checkpoints. Get there early, work fast, and don't let logistics eat your golden-hour window.

3. Bandra Fort (Castella de Aguada) — drama, heritage and the sea

If we had to pick one location that does the most work for a Mumbai pre-wedding shoot, it would be Bandra Fort. Stone walls with centuries of texture, crashing sea below, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link curving out in the background — it's genuinely cinematic before we've done anything.

The mood it gives you: Dramatic, romantic, a little cinematic. Works equally well for heritage looks and contemporary couples.

Best light window: Arrive by 4:30–5 PM to settle in before golden hour. The last 30 minutes of light here are extraordinary.

What we love shooting here:

  • Silhouettes against the sea and the Sea Link

  • Textured stone-wall portraits with depth and character

  • Wide frames with the couple small against the dramatic sky

  • Candid walks along Bandstand promenade once the light softens

Permit note: Public space — small crews and handheld setups don't need prior permission. Large commercial setups, drones or lighting rigs should be cleared in advance.

Watch out for: Wind. Bandra Fort gets gusty. Secure your outfits and bring clips — a flowing dupatta in a sea breeze either looks magical or becomes a 10-minute crisis.

4.Bandstand Promenade, Bandra — relaxed, editorial and actually fun

Often combined with Bandra Fort but worth treating separately — Bandstand's promenade is where we love to shoot couples who want their pre-wedding to feel genuinely relaxed. Palm-lined, breezy, with good long sightlines and a casual Mumbai energy that's hard to replicate anywhere else.

The mood it gives you: Light, editorial, natural. Less "photoshoot", more "actually us on a good day."

Best light window: Early morning for calm light and empty paths; post-sunset blue hour for a moody, atmospheric feel.

What we love shooting here:

  • Walking-together candids under the palms

  • Quiet moments on the benches facing the sea

  • Playful frames with natural motion — the breeze does the work

  • Wide environmental portraits that let Mumbai breathe into the frame

Permit note: Public space, no special permission required for personal shoots.

Watch out for: Can get crowded by late afternoon, especially weekends. Weekday mornings are ideal.

5. Versova Beach — bohemian, raw and beautifully offbeat

If you're willing to skip the obvious in exchange for something more textured and real, Versova is your answer. The beach itself is beautiful — golden sand, calmer waves, a long horizon. But the real magic is the backdrop: the Versova fishing village, with its wooden boats, colourful nets and a raw, lived-in soul that gives photographs an entirely different quality.

The mood it gives you: Bohemian, earthy, authentic. For couples who want their photos to feel like a story, not a catalogue.

Best light window: Sunrise (6–7:30 AM) for soft light and low tide; early evenings for warm sand and fewer people.

What we love shooting here:

  • Frames through and around the wooden fishing boats

  • Reflections in wet sand at low tide

  • Candid beach-walk moments where the couple forgets the camera exists

  • Editorial portraits against the rustic fishing village backdrop

Permit note: Public beach, generally accessible. Weekday mornings are the cleanest for shooting.

Watch out for: Can get busy and noisy by mid-morning. Monsoon tides can make access unpredictable — have a backup plan.

6. Asiatic Society Library Steps, Fort — heritage, symmetry and old Bombay soul

The white neoclassical columns and wide marble steps of the Asiatic Library are a photographer's dream — symmetrical, grand, and bathed in soft morning light before the city really wakes up. This is South Bombay at its most atmospheric.

The mood it gives you: Sophisticated, vintage, editorial. Works beautifully with traditional Indian outfits as well as clean contemporary looks.

Best light window: 6–8 AM, before the streets fill. Pair it with a stop at Horniman Circle gardens nearby for variety.

What we love shooting here:

  • Symmetrical staircase portraits with depth and grandeur

  • Candid moments on the steps with the city slowly waking behind

  • Detail-rich frames — the architecture does the heavy lifting

  • A quick walk through nearby Kala Ghoda for street-art backdrops

Permit note: A prior permit from the library is typically required for photography. Arrange this in advance — it's worth it.

7. Sanjay Gandhi National Park / Kanheri Caves — for the couple who wants green

Every list above is coastal or architectural. This one is different. If your aesthetic leans earthy, natural and a little mystical, SGNP and the Kanheri Caves offer something no other Mumbai location can — a genuine forest.

The mood it gives you: Lush, organic, timeless. Completely unlike anything else in Mumbai. Think dappled light through tree canopies, moss-covered stone and the kind of quiet you forget exists in this city.

Best light window: Early morning — as the sun rises, light filters through the canopy in streams. Cinematic without trying.

What we love shooting here:

  • Soft-light portraits under forest cover

  • Moody frames at the ancient Kanheri Caves

  • Natural, unhurried walking sequences through the trails

  • Close-up detail shots — textures, leaves, stone — woven into the love story

Permit note: Entry fees apply; commercial photography may require prior permission from forest authorities. Plan logistics — the park is large and shooting spots are spread out.

How to plan your pre-wedding shoot — the Swai way

A great shoot is 30% location and 70% preparation. Here's what we tell every couple before we get going:

  • Pick 2–3 locations, not 6. Racing between locations kills the mood. Two spots shot well is always better than five shots rushed.

  • Build your day around light, not convenience. Golden hour waits for no one. If you want beautiful frames, you work around the light.

  • Dress for the location's palette. Flowing, warm-toned outfits at the beach. Jewel tones against the stone walls of a fort. Neutrals and whites for forest greens. We'll share a moodboard before every shoot.

  • Use it to get comfortable with the camera. The pre-wedding shoot exists precisely so your wedding day feels natural. Treat it as play, not performance.

  • Brainstorm with us first. Every shoot starts in a WhatsApp group where we share ideas, references and a loose plan. No surprises, just collaboration.

  • Frequently asked questions

  • How long does a pre-wedding shoot in Mumbai typically take? Most shoots run 3–5 hours across one or two locations. We'd always rather shoot one spot deeply than rush through three.

  • What's the best time of year for a pre-wedding shoot in Mumbai? October through February is ideal — cooler temperatures, manageable humidity, and beautiful light. Monsoon shoots (June–September) have their own moody, dramatic magic but need flexibility and backup plans.

  • Do we need permits for shooting at these locations? Most outdoor, public locations (Marine Drive, Bandstand, Versova) don't need prior permission for personal shoots. Heritage-managed sites (Asiatic Library, Kanheri Caves, Gateway of India for commercial work) require advance clearance. We'll guide you on this.

  • Can we do a pre-wedding shoot at a 5-star hotel? Yes — and it's stunning.

  • How far in advance should we book? We recommend booking at least 2–3 months ahead, especially for October–February slots which fill up fast.

  • Do you shoot pre-wedding films too? Absolutely. We do short pre-wedding films alongside photo shoots — a 1–2 minute cinematic piece to tell your story before the wedding day. Ask us about it when you reach out.

  • Do you cover pre-wedding shoots for all communities? Always. We photograph couples across Marwadi, South Indian and every other tradition. The locations change; our storytelling approach doesn't.

Let's plan your shoot

Mumbai has no shortage of beautiful places. The real question is finding the spots that feel like you — and then letting the light and the moment do the rest.

That's exactly what we're here for. Let's plan a pre-wedding shoot that feels nothing like a photoshoot.
